The plan would rezone 464 park-designated parcels, covering more than 9,000 acres, from residential zoning to a dedicated Parks and Recreation district.
These parcels stretch across Anchorage neighborhoods, trail systems, and greenbelts that many residents already use daily.
The move lines up with the Anchorage 2040 Land Use Plan, which prioritizes protecting parks, expanding trail corridors, and preventing future development pressure on open space.
Instead of leaving park land vulnerable to zoning conflicts, the city is trying to permanently match zoning with how the land is actually used.
Supporters say it brings long-term clarity for maintenance, planning, and public access.
This does not change how people use parks today, but it could shape what is protected decades from now.
