Alaska jobs shift again

State just released its 2026 jobs forecast, and the changes aren’t even across the map. Anchorage, the Mat Su, Fairbanks, and Southeast are all heading in slightly different directions depending on industry.

Health care, construction, and some service jobs are expected to keep growing. Those sectors are tied closely to population growth, housing, and infrastructure needs, especially in Southcentral and the Interior.

Other areas are expected to cool off. Some government and resource related roles are projected to stay flat or shrink, which matters in regions that rely heavily on those jobs.

For workers, this affects where opportunities show up. For businesses and developers, it signals where demand for housing and services may rise next.

Anchorage and the Mat Su continue to act like economic magnets, while Fairbanks stays closely linked to military and state activity.

These forecasts don’t lock anything in. But they do shape how people plan moves, careers, and investments.
