Alaska bets big on railroads

Alaska Railroad rolled out its 2025 to 2030 strategic plan, and it’s focused on expansion, not just upkeep.

Northern rail extension, Port MacKenzie connectivity, and major terminal projects are all top priorities. This isn’t about fixing what’s broken. It’s about opening places that still can’t move freight.

The plan ties rail growth directly to resource development and tidewater access. Minerals, fuel, construction materials, and bulk cargo only matter if they can move, and rail is the missing link in huge parts of the state. When tracks go in, investment usually follows.

Port MacKenzie shows up again for a reason. The railroad sees it as a pressure valve for Anchorage and a gateway for Interior exports. If rail reaches the right places, Alaska stops leaving money in the ground.
