a $400 million health win

And it's going straight to the health system serving Alaska Native people.

The federal government just agreed to pay four hundred million dollars to the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium. It settles a fight that's been going on since 2021.

That's a years long fight finally landing with a number most of us can barely picture. It's money that's about to move straight into health care here at home.

The consortium runs health programs for American Indian and Alaska Native people all across our state, including big parts of the Alaska Native Medical Center here in Anchorage. That's a lot of clinics, a lot of providers, and a lot of families who count on that system every single day.

The whole case came down to one question, and it's one worth sitting with for a second. When the health system collects money from Medicare or private insurance, does the federal government still owe it extra support costs on top? A Supreme Court ruling said yes, and that's what forced this settlement.

The Justice Department says the money gives the consortium more support and more independence to keep running its own health care. For Alaska Native families who rely on these services, that's real money going back into a system that was built for them in the first place.
