$750,000 just landed in fairview

A nonprofit called True North Recovery is buying an existing building near Tenth Avenue in Fairview. They're opening a new recovery center there.

That's a quiet stretch of the neighborhood, right by the community rec center where a lot of local kids spend their afternoons. It's easy to see why people paid close attention to this one from the start.

Instead of running a walk in crisis clinic, they're planning to send staff out to meet people directly in the community, wherever they are, rather than asking people to come to them. It's a different model than a lot of us picture when we hear the words recovery center.

Neighbors around the rec center worried about what a center like this could mean for the block. So the nonprofit signed an agreement with the Fairview Community Council, promising the Fairview site sticks to appointment based care, not crisis drop ins.

Three assembly members were against the funding at first. After the agreement got signed, member Sydney Scout came around, saying Anchorage genuinely needs more behavioral health services and this group is a solid fit to provide them right now, today. The seven hundred fifty thousand dollars in funding is already approved.
