And the piece that hits us hardest isn't the flight line, it's housing.

The Air Force plans to spend nearly seven billion dollars rebuilding Anchorage's joint base over the next decade. It's a program they call Fightertown: hangars, dorms, taxiways, fuel storage, flight simulators, warehouses.

Construction is expected to start in the summer of 2027 and run through 2035.

Senator Dan Sullivan called the spending historic, and said the Air Force isn't putting that kind of money into the base unless it plans to bring more aircraft and more people to Alaska. Those missions are classified for now.

Now the housing math. Family housing on base is already 98 percent full. The base estimates the housing it can't provide sends about ten million dollars a month into Anchorage rents and mortgage payments off base.

The mayor has a resolution calling housing essential to keeping this economy stable.
