11 dollars off your power bill

A used generator could knock about $11 off the average Golden Valley power bill, and it costs $80 million to find out.

The Golden Valley Electric Association board voted 4 to 3, after roughly two hours of debate, to keep studying the purchase of a used 60-megawatt LM6000 turbine. The unit would be installed at Golden Valley's North Pole Expansion plant, next to the existing older LM6000, and would run on naphtha, a liquid petroleum-based fuel.

What it means for members: the co-op's projection is a decrease of nearly $11 a month on a residential member's bill, spread over a 30-year repayment period. That long horizon is exactly what the dissenting board members questioned.

Voting in favor: Rick Solie, Brad Swope, Krista Zappone and John Sloan. Voting against: board chair Dave Messier, Gary Newman and Phil Wight. Messier said it is a very large strategic generation purchase for a utility and that the board wants to make sure it has turned over every stone.

Nothing has been purchased. The board is scheduled to take the question up again at next month's meeting, and GVEA board meetings are open to members across Fairbanks, North Pole, Delta Junction and the Interior.
